Nano influencer, micro, macro: which influencer is which?

With the influencer market set to hit $21.1 billion in 2023, it’s more important than ever that you’re staying up to date with the ever-evolving world of influencer marketing.

And picking the right partner is absolutely crucial to success. So, before you start on your first campaign, you’ll need to know your terms!

What's the difference between a macro, micro or nano influencer?

  • Nano influencer: someone with a following under 10,000.
  • Micro influencer: someone with a following from 10,000 to 200,000 followers.
  • Macro influencer: someone with a following from 200,000 to 1,000,000.
  • Mega influencer: someone with a following over 1,000,000.

Should you choose a nano influencer or a mega one?

But which category should you be focusing on?

If you’re a newer business with a fairly small social media presence, you’ll probably want to start in the nano influencer or micro zone. Remember, a partnership has to be beneficial to both parties. So, mega influencers might not see the benefit from working for free or working for a brand that won’t gain them following.

Nano influencers will also be cheaper. As a small business it’s likely you don’t have the biggest budget in the world. You’ll only have to google “how much does Kylie Jenner charge per post” to see the HUGE fees that some of the really popular influencers are demanding.

Women fainting at the shock of how much mega influencers get paid compared to a nano influencer

BUT, just because a nano or micro-influencer doesn’t have as much of a following, this definitely doesn’t mean they’re not as beneficial. Smaller influencers tend to be really in-tune with their audience. This means their content is often far more relevant and targeted. Which naturally results in a higher engagement rate. If you have a small following but massive interaction, your engagement rate will be higher, and with nano influencers (the good ones, anyway), this is normally the case.

(Top tip: you can look up influencers’ engagement rates on websites like HypeAuditor.)

Ready for the big time?

If you do have a budget and are after as much brand exposure as you can get in a short period of time, you’ll want to be looking at mega-influencers. Just remember, exposure is only beneficial if it’s to the right people…

Lessons from a PR Intern

Coming from France to join the ASV team as their PR intern, I have had the chance to dive into the exciting world of PR. I’ve worked alongside industry professionals and gained valuable hands-on experience. I’ve seen first-hand how PR strategies and tactics are developed and implemented in real-life situations. Now, I can share the top lessons that I’ve learnt on the job.

1. Adaptability is key

Moving to a new country and working in a new industry has been overwhelming at times. However, it has allowed me to learn that taking the time to adapt to a new culture and environment is essential to success. I found that being open-minded, curious, and showing my willingness to learn truly helped me thrive as a PR intern.

2. Embracing Cultural Differences as a PR Intern

Secondly, coming from France, I had to adapt to a new culture and language. While it was intimidating at first, I found that embracing these differences allowed me to learn and grow both personally and professionally.

3. Creativity is essential

In PR, creativity is essential, especially when developing campaigns, and being able to contribute and come up with ideas and creative solutions pushed me to think outside the box and come up with innovative ways to reach our client’s target audience.

4. The importance of communication

As a non-native English speaker, I was initially nervous about communicating effectively with my colleagues. However, I quickly realised that communication is key in the PR industry and that being clear, concise, and confident is essential to success.

5. Attention to detail is crucial

Learning how even small errors can have a significant impact on a PR campaign’s success has allowed me to develop a meticulous eye for detail —proofreading, fact-checking, and ensuring that all information is accurate and up-to-date before sending it to the media is KEY!

Lessons from a PR Intern - Communication and accuracy is key

Of course, Interning in PR in a city like London has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. In short, I’ve learned so much about the industry and myself. I feel that I’ve grown both professionally and personally. In fact, the cultural differences between France and the UK have taught me to be more adaptable and open-minded. Finally, I’m excited to take these lessons with me as I continue my career.

5 Reasons to add Influencer Marketing into your Marketing Mix

Working in Social Media, we spend a lot of our days liaising with influencers to try and secure some features for our clients. And when it works, and we do manage to create an amazing activation or get some incredible coverage, you may see us celebrating our influencer marketing strategy like this:

5 Reasons to add Influencer Marketing into your Marketing Mix - celebrating how successful our marketing is

This is because, at ASV, we know and have seen first-hand the power that influencers have over consumers, the power to, well… influence! But what are the main benefits that your brand could reap, should you sow the seeds of influencer marketing?

1. Building Brand Trust

Firstly, Influencers have already built trust with their followers. They have a ready-made list of people, a community, that respect their opinions and are waiting to hear their recommendations. By working with the influencer, you get to benefit from this, too.

2. Increasing Brand Awareness

Secondly, Influencer marketing can greatly expand your reach and positioning online, introducing your brand to a whole new audience.

3. Put Your Product/Service in Front of Your Target Audience

If you’re choosing the correct influencer to work with, they’ll be in touch with the right people you want to put your brand in front of. This is why it’s KEY to carefully select who you’re working with, rather than just opting for anyone.

4. Content Creation & Influencer Marketing

It can be so hard to think of content ideas, not just for social media but across all channels. Working with influencers is a great way to fill any gaps and introduce interesting, authentic and engaging content for your customers.

5. Value for Money

Yes, working with influencers can be expensive, but compared to costly, traditional advertising, it can actually be cheaper and generate a better ROI and have FAR more benefits (especially if you’re looking to work with micro-influencers).

Creating a solid PR strategy plan is essential for the success of ANY business. Not only does it help get your brand message across to the right people, but it also is key to building and growing a solid reputation. But where do you start?

This week we are sharing the 5 steps to help you create a PR strategy that delivers results.

Step 1: Set Your PR Goals

Start by defining what you want to achieve through your PR efforts. Are you looking to increase brand awareness, generate more leads, or improve your reputation? Once you have a clear idea of your goals, it’ll be easier to create a plan that aligns with them.

Step 2: Know Your Target Audience

It’s important to understand who you’re trying to reach. Do you know who your ideal customers or clients are? Are you aware of their pain points, interests, and behaviours? Knowing who you’re targeting will help you tailor your messaging and outreach that will resonate with them.

Step 3: Create a Budget

PR can be costly, so it’s important to create a budget that aligns with your goals and resources before getting carried away with incredible ideas. Determine how much you can afford to spend on things like media outreach, content creation, and events and consider how you can maximise your budget by leveraging free or low-cost PR tools.

Step 4: Brainstorm Ideas & Determine Your Channels

Time to get creative! This is without a doubt our favourite moment when creating PR strategies for clients. Bearing in mind your goals, your audience and your budget, think of different ways you can get your message out there. Brainstorm ideas for newsworthy stories, events, or campaigns and determine which channels you’ll use to reach your audience, such as social media, email marketing, or press releases.

Download our Pitch Perfect bundle.

Step 5: Define How To Measure Your PR Strategy Plan

Finally, it’s important to be clear how you’ll measure the success of your PR efforts so you can continuously improve and refine your strategy. As we like to say, strategies are alive so they should constantly be updated. Determine how you’ll measure things like media coverage, website traffic, and social media engagement. Use these metrics to assess the impact of your PR efforts and adjust your strategy accordingly.

How to write an attention-grabbing email

We’ve been asked on several occasions how to pitch to the media, influencers and even retailers, and the truth is: it’s easier than you might think. All you have to do is write an attention-grabbing email that packs a punch.

So this week, we are sharing the five tips that will help you write an attention-grabbing email that will make your brand stand out:

1) Write an Attention-grabbing Email Subject Line

Firstly, I know what you are going to say here. That you are busy. That you don’t have time. That there are more important things to do… And of course, maybe that’s true. At least to an extent.

However, it’s here where you need to remember that coming up with a compelling subject line can really make someone open your email. One you have spent some time writing.

2) Personalise Your Email

Always, always, always tailor your emails. Nobody wants to receive something that feels like a template. This is your chance to start making genuine connections, so take the time to personalise your emails.

For example, are you emailing an influencer? Tell them how much you love their style and why. A retailer? Explain why your brand would be a great addition to their current offering. Or is it an editor? Then go ahead and let them know how much you enjoyed reading their last article.

3) Use an Approriate Tone

I’m all about injecting some personality into emails. However, I also know that not everyone will be pleased to see my emails with exclamation marks, a few emojis here and there or memes (I’ll never understand that).

This is why I make sure to check the voice and tone they use on Social Media and within their writing – especially when I’ve never spoken with that person before. Because at the end of the day, how you say it is as important as what you say.

4) Keep it Short and Sweet

Yep. You read that right. We are not at uni, so nobody wants to read an essay.

People now barely spend a couple of seconds scanning their emails, which is why it’s so important that you make sure what you are saying is relevant, interesting and exciting. This is your time to rave about your business, but keep it snappy!

5) End With A Clear Call To Action

Lastly, what is it that you want from this? What are you expecting to get in return?

Is it getting your brand featured in the press? Or meeting a buyer to potentially discuss selling your brand there? Whatever that is, make it clear.

We hope you found our blog post helpful in learning how to write an attention-grabbing email! For more tips, be sure to follow us on Instagram and subscribe to our newsletter. But, if you’d like to carry on learning, check out this article on planning your PR Strategy.
